Catching Shadows edition by Cincinnati Writers Literature Fiction eBooks
Catching Shadows is an anthology of short stories created and published by the Cincinnati Fiction Writers Group. The anthology is a dark and incisive look at human nature. There is a common thread that resonates throughout the volume. Most of the stories involve death in one way or another and the motivations of murder or aspects that drive a person to unspeakable actions by most and entirely justified by some. Stories of particular note are Wendy Vogel's Ashes to Ashes, which is deeply chilling despite its brevity. As I reader I was looking for more detail into the main character and her motivations, as well as regrets if any. That aside, for such a short piece it truly touched me. Just a Job by David Tolle recounts a story nearly everyone can sympathize and envision. We follow a curious descent into one man's psyche. His view of the school that he once attended as an adolescent resonated with me. Cameron Smith's contribution: The Doll, is lighter in some way, but illustrates the bitter truth of retirees and the meager circumstances they can find themselves in. And what they are driven to. This was one of the most endearing stories in the collection that brought a tear to my eye.Another notable mention is Eat by John Burris. The plotting in this tale is well crafted. E.A. Poe love this story. The characters are crisp, the dialogue entrancing. The ending of the story could have been slimmed down for my tastes, but as a whole a superb story that was well crafted from start to finish. Burris is an artisan of the highest caliber. Murder My Pet by Stacey Bender was just deliciously creepy and will give any pet owner a chuckle because we really know that sometimes behind that cute muzzle lurks the heart of a stone cold killer.
These stories are just few, but they are all great tales that are sure to horrify and delight, at the same time! One minor complaint for me was that the Kindle version lacked a Table of Contents, a minor pet peeve. Overall this is a collection by a group of masters that truly love and understand the short story in all its nuances.
The proceeds of this book go to charity. If you love dark tales of wonder, it's a sincere mistake to pass this one up.
